Release: Feb. 26, 2002
TheraLife® invited
to present clinical trial results for its unique treatment
of dry eyes and eye fatigue at isopp meeting in spain.
TheraLife®, Inc., an emerging leader in the
discovery and development of cutting-edge drug enhancement
technologies, today announced that Lily C. Yang, Ph.D.,
the company's CEO and President, has been invited to present
the results of its clinical trial for a unique oral treatment
of dry eyes and eye fatigue at the 4th International Symposium
on Ocular Pharmacology and Pharmeceutics, Feb. 28 - Mar.
2, 2002 in Seville, Spain.
The International Symposium on Ocular Pharmacology and Pharmaceutics
focuses on drug development and new drug applications. Sponsored
by Eli Lilly, Pharmacia, Allergan, Novartis (Ciba Vision),
Bausch & Lomb, Alcon, Santen, Senju Pharmaceuticals, Mitsubishi
Parma Corporation, and Merck Sharp and Dohme, the conference
will update ophthalmologists from around the world on clinical
topics ranging from glaucoma, inflammation, infection, neuroprotection,
and angiogenesis to blood flow and drug delivery.
"Blood flow and drug delivery are two unique aspects of
our approach to the treatment of dry eyes and eye fatigue,"
said Dr. Yang. "We are very honored and excited to be a
participant at the conference."
"TheraLife® has developed an oral formulation
that relieves dry eyes and eye fatigue in cases where conventional
treatment modalities - including eye drops, such as artificial
tears, and punctal plugs - have failed to produce lasting
results," said Dr. Yang.
"One of the most scientifically provocative aspects of the
just-completed clinical trial," explained Dr. Yang, "is
the indication that our technology allows therapeutic agents
in the blood to reach the eye, which previously has been
virtually impossible to accomplish. The company's products
- "TheraLife® Enhancer" and "TheraLife®
Eye" - appear to be the only drug combination that is able
to penetrate the so-called 'eye-blood barrier,' providing
sustained relief through natural tear production."
Results from the six site, double blind, placebo-controlled
clinical trial, conducted by leading optometrists and ophthalmologists
in California and analyzed and tabulated by the Health Research
and Studies Center, an independent clinical research organization,
demonstrated significant improvement in eye dryness, tiredness,
and contact lens discomfort as well as clinical improvement
as measured by two standard tests: (1) the tear breakup
test, and (2) the zone quick test. The TheraLife®
treatment also exhibited an excellent safety profile, with
no significant systemic adverse safety findings.
"This breakthrough approach," said Todd D. Severin, M.D.,
a leading ophthalmologist specializing in the treatment
of glaucoma and Assistant Clinical Professor at the University
of California at Berkeley, "addresses a critical clinical
need for the eye industry that potentially can lead to the
treatment of other serious eye disorders - diabetic retinopathy,
macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts, for example
- that can translate into an even more substantial health
benefits."
Dr. Yang explained that TheraLife®'s proprietary
formulations were five years in development and use a unique
combination of nutrients and phytochemicals to boost intracellular
metabolism, membrane permeability and blood microcirculation
to create their landmark effect. The ability of the formulation
to function on a cellular level, she noted, has been scientifically
demonstrated by independent testing.
